A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
